Darby

On July 24, 2016 Tropical Storm Darby rolled through the Hawaiian islands. I don't really know how the other islands fared because I currently exist blissfully in the absence of any news. However, I did survive the storm's wrath on Oahu.

Okay, it wasn't quite wrathful, mostly just rainy, but there was a good amount of lightning, power outages and fallen limbs. The coolest thing by far, however was seeing the entire Ko'olau mountain range dumping water off its numerous valleys. Most days the mountains that create the barrier between me and Honolulu are green and awe-inspiring but dry. Yesterday was the exception to the rule. While the H1 was flooding and Waimea Valley was dumping water out into the ocean I got to see waterfalls that start at 2,400' plummet down over a thousand feet. Clouds would drift through, blocking our view, and then suddenly dissipate revealing a smattering of raging waterfalls. Pure magic.

That evening was a little more intense. If you haven't seen my tent, I encourage you to check out this post. At some points throughout the night the whole tent would lean over in a big gust of wind and the rainfly and tarp would flap wildly. The wind here is unlike any I have ever experienced. I would hear it coming from a mile away, unrelentingly through the trees and over fields until it slammed into my little tent and me. I didn't think I was going to sleep at all, but then I remembered I had a pair of earplugs in the tent. I popped those bad boys in and slept like a baby till almost 8:30 (I normally get up at 4:45 on harvest days or 5:30 normal days).

Here we are, playing in a tropical storm, just like home.
